The Box That Brought Our Team Together

Last year, our boutique shop, Rocky Mountain Home & Gift, decided to try a Reverse Advent Calendar as a way to give back and bring some heart into the busiest retail month of the year. December is always chaotic for us — customers, holiday orders, inventory, late nights — but we wanted to create space for generosity, not just transactions.

We placed a beautifully decorated box at the front counter on December 1st. Staff added the first few items, and we posted a sign inviting customers to help fill it throughout the month. “One item a day,” the sign read, “Let’s make Christmas about giving again.”

What happened next surprised us.

Customers didn’t just drop items in the box — they paused to talk about why it mattered. One woman brought in a pack of diapers, saying she remembered how stressful the holidays were when her kids were little. A teenager purchased a pair of men’s winter gloves from our own shelves and added them to the box with a quiet smile. A couple brought in a bag filled with hygiene items, explaining they had grown up in families that struggled at Christmas and wanted to give back.

Our staff also embraced the ritual. Every morning before opening, someone picked the day’s item from our “wishlist jar.” Every evening, someone else took a moment to tidy the box and read the notes customers had left.

By December 20th, the box was overflowing. We had to tape the sides and start a second one. We decided to donate both to The Mustard Seed — a charity many of our staff hold close.

On December 22nd, a few of us closed the shop early and drove the boxes over. As we carried them inside, a volunteer welcomed us warmly, sharing how winter months are especially challenging for those experiencing homelessness. She ran her hand along one of the gloves in the box and said, “This will mean a lot to someone.”

Standing there in the quiet of the donation centre, surrounded by shelves of food, toiletries, and winter clothing, we felt a collective moment of gratitude.
Our small shop — our small team — had contributed to something much bigger.

When we returned to the store, the staff decided unanimously: “This will be part of Rocky Mountain every year.”

And this year, we’re planning three boxes — because our customers, our staff, and our community made us believe in the power of giving again.

Make Christmas About Giving Again.

Every box reminds someone in our city that they are seen, supported, and not alone.
And every participant becomes part of a Calgary community that chooses kindness — one day and one item at a time.
