The Box That Brought Our Team Together

Last year was the first time our family participated in the Reverse Advent Calendar.

We stumbled upon the idea on social media, and my daughter said, “Let’s do this instead of chocolate this year!” So we found an old moving box in the basement, wrapped it in leftover holiday paper, and set it by the dining room table.

On December 1st, we placed our first item inside — a can of soup. Nothing special. Nothing complicated. But something shifted in our family almost immediately.

Every evening, instead of rushing through dinner and homework, we made time to choose the day’s item. One night my son picked warm gloves. Another night my daughter added a box of baby wipes.

My husband wrote a short message on a card: “You’re not alone. Calgary cares about you.”

Some days the kids asked hard questions:

  • “Why don’t some families have enough food?”
  • “Where do the donations go?”
  • “Could this help a kid my age?”

Those conversations weren’t always easy, but they were important. They helped our kids understand empathy, gratitude, and community in a way no school lesson ever could.

By the time our box was full — overflowing, actually — it felt like a scrapbook of our family’s December. Sticker-filled, handwritten notes, a few candies tucked in for fun, and a carefully chosen mix of food and essentials.

We decided to deliver our box to The Calgary Food Bank on December 23rd. The kids carried it from the car, stumbling a little under the weight. A volunteer met us at the door, smiling warmly as she explained how donations help families who need a little extra support over the holidays.

My daughter hugged the side of the box and whispered, “I hope the family who gets this feels happy.”

And that’s when I realized that this wasn’t just a donation – it was an experience. A memory.

A new tradition our family had built together.

On the drive home, the kids asked if we could do two boxes this year — “one for kids and one for grown-ups.” We said yes immediately.

Our Reverse Advent Calendar didn’t just help another Calgary family. It changed ours.

Make Christmas About Giving Again.

Every box reminds someone in our city that they are seen, supported, and not alone.
And every participant becomes part of a Calgary community that chooses kindness — one day and one item at a time.
